A number of local teams made Sectionals and began play this week. In Class A the Patroon Conference champions, Ichabod Crane was given the #1 South seed. The Riders will open play Friday night against #4 North Catholic Central. I'll be at that game tonight just as I was at the Chatham Panthers game today, so check back tomorrow to see my write ups on those two games. As just stated I was at the Chatham game today as the highly favored #2 seed in Class CC fell to seventh seeded Hoosick Falls.
Also in Class CC is Maple Hill who was seeded fourth and opened up Thursday against fifth seeded Cambridge. In Class B Coxsackie Athens was seeded 8th, Cairo Durham fourth and Greenville seventh. All three Class B teams opened post season play on Thursday. In Class D New Lebanon got things going on Wednesday with a first round win and return to action on Friday.
New Lebanon v. Salem
The ninth seeded Tigers headed to Salem on Wednesday and came away with a 3-0 upset win. There have been varying reports on who provided the offense for the Tigers but the important thing is New Lebanon jumped on Salem 2-0 in the first half before added another in the second half.
The victory moves New Lebanon into the next round where they will have to face top seeded Fort Ann on Friday. Once we have results in from that game we will let everyone know if the Tigers can continue their quest.
Fonda v. Cairo Durham
Fourth seeded Cairo propelled themselves into the next round with an easy 5-0 victory over Fonda on Thursday. Cairo scored just a single goal in the first half before putting up four more in the second.
Kody Koening scored a hat trick for the Mustangs while Chris Gagliardi and Zach McGrath each added goals. Dalton Phillips, Stephen Zwoboda, McGrath, Matt Hines and Gagliardi all picked up assists. Cory Gransbury made 2 stops in goal for the 'Stangs.
Up next for Cairo is a match up against fifth seeded Schuylerville on Saturday.
Cobleskill Richmondville v. Greenville
Seventh seeded Greenville held on for a 2-1 win on Thursday over Cobleskill. George Harvey converted a penalty kick in the first half before the Bulldogs evened things before halftime. In the second half Mike Sanchez headed in a corner from James Tschinkel for the win. Tucker Lewis made 3 stops in the win.
Greenville will next face Broadalbin Perth on Saturday night.
Johnstown v. Coxsackie Athens
The eighth seeded Indians hosted the Sir Bills on Thursday and the ninth seed came away with a 3-1 upset victory. Felipe Plotze opened the scoring for the Indians before Johnstown evened the game before half.
In the second half Coxsackie missed a penalty kick and things went down hill after that as Johnstown scored two unanswered goals to advance to the next round.
Cambridge v. Maple Hill
Despite some struggles this season Maple Hill was still seeded fourth and opened up sectional play looking strong than their seed with a 3-0 victory. The Wildcats scored a lone goal in the first 40 minutes before putting in two more in the second half.
Adam Fuller netted 2 goals for MH while Eric Bureau scored the last. Steven Sepkowski and Jake Yager each picked up assists while Derek Van Alstyne made six saves in goal.
Up next for Maple Hill is a game next week, more than likely against top seeded Voorheesville.
