ICC-MH Girl's Preview

Although Hudson had a short run atop the Patroon Conference once Ichabod Crane left to play an independent schedule it has been Maple Hill who has risen to the top in recent years. With Ichabod back in the Patroon and running over teams their match up on Wednesday with the Wildcats becomes even more intriguing. Both teams have made it look easy as they've jumped out to undefeated starts.

Both teams have a lot of height. The Riders can look for a number of different players to lead them on any given night. Rebecca Smith won't be the tallest player in this game but will be one of the toughest on the boards and down low for ICC. Sarah Wheeler has also played well for the Riders so far this year averaging almost 10 points a game. Another foursome of players will also provide size, rebounding and some points down low, Cassidy Austin, Chrissy James, Monica Hall and Hannah Smith.

For Maple Hill their star is Katie Roth a 6'2" Junior. Jessica Dailey and Samantha Hendricks both check in at close to 6' while Anna Racz also brings in some size. Dailey is an important piece because she can stretch a defense by being able to step outside and hit a three.

I think a lot of the size for both of these teams will cancel out, if either is able to really control the boards or outscore the other based on the bigs then that team could actually dominate what should be a close game. Like I said however I think for the most part the bigs cancel each other out which leads us to the wings and guards.

The Riders are going to rely on three players to handle their perimeter duties. Haley Ooms has been running the point and racking up the assists and steals. Her defensive pressure on the ball denying entry passes inside will be key for ICC. Shana Barry has good size and good energy and can step out and hit a three, she's going to be crucial in checking Dailey. Alyssa Stall could be the big key in this game. She's the Rider's most consistent deep threat and her ability to get free and get hot from deep will be big.

For Maple Hill they will rely on Dailey to hit outside shots even though she's tall and Racz to create off the bounce. Kristen DerGurahian will have to come up big on offense and defense. She's always brought a ton of energy to the defensive end. Not having Meeghan Arno at the point this year could be big, she has been a really good creator for them for the last 2 years.

I think the Riders are deeper which certainly plays to their advantage but Maple Hill is a little more versatile. It's an interesting early season match up and neither can overlook undefeated Greenville either. But for now their eyes have to be on this anticipated contest. My gut reaction says Maple Hill starts hot, takes an early lead and in the end holds on 66-59.

The Week that was: Columbia County Girl's Basketball

In a bit of a rush so I'm going to skip out on the non local teams for girl's basketball and instead just take a look at the Columbia County teams.

Ichabod Crane-

Their return to the Patroon Conference has been a smooth one so far as the Riders notched two more wins to improve to 4-0 on the young season. The Riders beat up on Cairo and Chatham winning by a combined 144-20, scoring 72 in both games.

Against Cairo the Riders had nine different players score and 5 went for double digits. Cassidy Austin scored a game high 12 points while Alyssa Stall went for 11. A trio of Riders scored 10 points, Shana Barry, Haley Ooms and Sarah Wheeler.

The Riders allowed just four players to score for Chatham while having 10 players score for themselves. Sarah Wheeler led the charge with 12 points while Shanna Barry added 11 and Rebecca Smith had 10.

The Riders will face their biggest test of the season on Wednesday when they host Maple Hill, who took over as the dominant team in the league after the Riders left the league a few years ago. Both teams will head into this game undefeated with early season bragging rights on the line.

Hudson-

After opening their season against powerhouses ICC and Maple Hill the Bluehawks had a pair of games this week and went 1-1 to improve their record to 1-3 in the league. Hudson topped Chatham by 30 points on Tuesday before falling to Rensselaer by four, 33-29 on Friday.

Hudson put 9 players into the scoring column against Chatham with Danielle Kitsock scoring a game high 15 points including a pair of triples. Jenna Turner added 11 while Sam Davis and Skylar Pertilla each scored 8.

In their hard fought loss to the Rams the Bluehawks were outscored by 2 in the first quarer, 8-6 and two more, 4-2 in the fourth falling by 4. Only five players score for Hudson with just one, Sam Davis scoring in double figures with 10.

Hudson will have a shot to draw their league record even next week when they play Taconic Hills and Cairo, two teams who have not been at their best in the early season.

Taconic Hills-

The Titans came into the week 1-1 and played just one game, on Tuesday where they were blown out by Maple Hill 46-13. Taconic Hills managed just 4, 2, 4 and 3 points in each of the four quarters.

Three players scored for the Titans with Alexis McComb scoring 6, Rachel Preusser scoring 4 and Kayla Henderson adding 3.

The Titans have two games schedule next week against two very solid teams in Rensselaer and Hudson. If the Titans can earn two wins they gain a lot of momentum heading into the Holiday break.

Chatham-

The Panthers remained winless after a pair of blowout losses this week. First Chatham fell by 40 to Hudson before falling by 59 to Ichabod Crane.

In the game against Hudson six different players scored for the Panthers. Chatham knocked down 8 three pointers in defeat. Karsyn Sawyer led the way with 9 points all on threes while Marissa Myers scored 8 points including a pair of threes. Erika Sheerin also added 6 points, all from beyond the arch.

Points were hard to come by against ICC as the Panthers scored just 5, 3, 0 and 5 in the four quarters. Four Panthers got into the scoring column led by Caitlin Gilligan who scored 5. Marissa Myers added 4 in the loss while Jackie Sheerin added 3 and Karsyn Sawyer chipped in with a free throw.

Things get no easier next week as the Panthers face off against a very good Catskill squad on Wednesday but may have a shot at their first win Friday when they travel to Coxsackie. The Indians are 0-3 and have been outscored 178 to 47.

Germantown-

The Clippers came into the week at 2-0 and had a pair of games on tap. The Clipps opened the week with a 60-18 thrashing of Hawthorne Valley. On Friday Germantown hosted fellow unbeaten Waterford and fell 57-55. The Waterford contest was back and forth the entire way before the Fordians were able to pull it out in the fourth quarter.

Against the Wildcats the Clipps did not allow their opponents to hit double digits in any quarter. Six different players scored for Germantown led by Taylor Race who finished with 24. Kim Kreig added 19 while Patti Cameron knocked in 11.

The dynamic guard duo of Katie Howe and Jackie Sorensen were big for Waterford on Friday combining for 35 points. For Germantown Taylor Race led all scorers with 27 points including a three pointer and 12 of 13 from the free throw line. Kim Kreig added 14 while four other Clipps got in on the scoring action.

Next week the Clipps are schedule to face off against 2-2 Loudonville Christian and winless New Lebanon as they look to get back on the winning track.

New Lebanon-

The Tigers were slated to play just one game this week, Friday against Hawthorne Valley. As of now we have no heard any updates from this game.

The Tigers have a tough week next week with 2 games scheduled. Both contests are against C.H.V.L. elites, Germantown and Waterford.

Hawthorne Valley-

Hawthorne Valley came into the week 0-2 and dropped to 0-3 after a blowout loss to Germantown. The Wildcats were scheduled to play New Lebanon on Friday but we have no been able to track down any reports from that game.

Against Germantown Frances Workman scored 14 of her team's 18 points in the loss.

The Wildcats will search for their first win next week as they play 2-2 Loudonville Christian on Wednesday then winless in league Doane Stuart on Friday.

The Week that was: Columbia County Girl's Basketball

Boys Bball from Thursday & Friday

After a day off from games due to the snow on Wednesday boys basketball got back into the swing of things on Thursday.

THURSDAY

Hawthorne Valley at New Lebanon

After their inspiring play late against Germantown earlier in the week the Wildcats came into New Lebanon looking for an upset but ran into a Tigers squad who is playing some great basketball right now. The Tigers jumped out to an 8 point lead after one and added to their lead in the middle quarters before Hawthorne Valley fought back some in the fourth before falling 58-43.

Bryan Potter again led the Tigers in scoring finishing with 16 points including a trio of triples. Mike Gavrity finished with 15 while Todd Ferguson added 11 in the win. Sjaak Smeele tallied 17 points for the Wildcats while Christian Peterson added 14, but the major factor was 6'7" Emil DeJong being held scoreless in the loss.

FRIDAY

Coxsackie Athens at Taconic Hills

The winless Titans came out fast and took a 3 point lead into the second quarter before the Indians settled in and took over en route to a 66-47 win. The Indians outscored the Titans 33-17 in the second half.

Nate Tailleur hit double digits yet again for the Indians finishing with 16 points while teammates Nathan Barbour and Dan Hanson scored 13 and 12 respectively. For the Titans Mike Jacobsen scored a game high 23 points despite not hitting a three pointer. Jacobsen was one of 7 Taconic Hills players to score but the only one to reach double digits.

Ichabod Crane at Chatham

In a classic Columbia County rivalry the Riders remained unbeaten as they pounded the young yet talented Panthers 64-41. The Riders used a 14-6 first quarter advantage and an 18-8 final quarter to get the win.

Chris Larm recorded a double double for ICC going for 24 points and 12 boards. Derick Horn finished with 14 points for the Riders while Tanner Wolfe added 12. Despite not scoring, senior guard Josh Ingham did a fantastic job in the second half slowing down Chatham's Will Gauthier.

Gauthier finished with a Panther high 24 points, but 15 of those came in the first half. Gauthier was one of just four Panthers who scored in the contest.

Hudson at Rensselaer

In a game that was closed to the public the Rams remained unbeaten and kept Hudson winless after a 60-49 game. The Rams took a two point lead into the half but pushed it to seven heading into the final quarter before sealing the game on a 20-16 run in the fourth.

Chris Britt scored a game high 26 points including 9 of 14 from the free throw line. Britt scored 11 of his points in the final quarter to lead the Rams while also adding 10 rebounds for the game. Mico Perez- De Los Santos added 14 in the win.

For Hudson nine different players got into the scoring column, but just one, Larell Roberts hit for double digits, finishing with 16 points.

Greenville at Maple Hill

The Wildcats blew out the Spartans 76-36 in Patroon Conference action. Maple Hill outscored Greenville in every quarter as they cruised to the victory to remain unbeaten.

Sean Danaher scored 17 points and added 11 rebounds for Maple Hill while David Briggs and Chris Despart added 15 and 14.

Not a single Greenville player reach double digits while their two big scorers, Ross Bentley and John Hicks combined for just 15 points.

Cairo Durham at Catskill

The Cats remained undefeated after a hard fought 61-46 win over the Mustangs Friday night. Catskill jumped out to a 4 point lead after one quarter and extended that to 16 heading into the half. As always the Mustangs did not let up as they cut their deficit to 8 heading into the final quarter but could not close the gap.

Dean Forrester scored a game high 19 points for Catskill. Hassan Spencer added 18 while teammate Jonathan Hall added 10. Three other Cats also got into the scoring action.

Brett Zimmerman led Cairo with 17 points while Cian McGeever scored 13 and Jonathan Halligan added 10.

Boys Bball so far this week and picks for Thursday/Friday

Well the snow knocked out one day of games, and left us with just a single Patroon Conference game and a handfull of local C.H.V.L. games leading up to the big slate of contests on Friday. Here's a look at the games that went on Monday and Tuesday.

TUESDAY

Doane Stuart at New Lebanon

The Tigers continue to impress with their early season play as they improved to 2-0 in league play. Although Doane Stuart is no powerhouse a 54-34 win for New Lebanon is still impressive. The Tigers used an 8-1 second quarter to propel them to victory.

Junior big man Bryan Potter continues to improve scoring 25 points after starting the year with 15. Potter impressed with a 3 of 3 performance from the free throw line and knocked down a pair of three's. Mike Gavrity added 8 and Todd Ferguson scored 7 in the win.

Rensselaer at Greenville

The Rams improved to 3-0 in the Patroon after a 73-62 win on the road. Rensselaer built a 7 point lead after one quarter but it was cut to one heading into the half. A strong second however pushed the Rams to the win.

Chris Britt led the Rams in scoring yet again going for 20. A trio of other Rams also hit double digits with Jarrid Wilkinson scoring 17 while Mico Perez-De Los Santos and Marquel Fallen each scored 11.

Ross Bentley led Greenville with 15 points while teammate John Hicks added 13.

Germantown at Hawthorne Valley

In what seemed like a lopsided game played at Columbia Greene Community College turned into a game that was played tighter than the final score indicated. The Clippers took a 26-2 lead after just one quarter and added 8 more points to their lead heading to the half. The Wildcats came out furiously in the second half playing the entire 16 minutes like the game was hanging in the balance. Against both Clippers subs and starters the Wildcats played with heart outscoring Germantown by 17 in the second half but it was not enough as the Clipps held on for the 63-48 win.

Cody Broast hit 3 field goals, 3 three pointers and 3 free throws scoring a game high 18 points for the Clipps. Daniel Thomas added 12 points on 2 field goals, 2 three's and 2 free throws. Seven other Clippers made their way into the scoring column.

For Hawthorne Valley Christian Peterson finished with 13 points while Emil DeJong and Sjaak Smeele each scored 11. Allan Gallardo added 7 in the loss for the Wildcats.

PICKS:

THURSDAY

Hawthorne Valley at New Lebanon

I loved the heart and hustle from the Wildcats against G-Town but they lack the creative scoring prescense to be a consistent threat. Then again if they play as hard as they did in the second half for a whole game, they could be tough for any team with their intensity and length. Still it looks to be like the Tigers have some pieces in place to have a nice year.

New Lebanon 65 -Hawthorne Valley 44

FRIDAY

Coxsackie Athens at Taconic Hills

The Titans are hurting this year, I like Chris Filli inside, Mike Jacobsen can shoot, they've got some youth but this just isn't a dangerous team. If they are going to get a win this year I think it'll be against Greenville. The Indians are better than people think, I was shocked they lost as bad as they did against ICC. Nate Tailleur is tall and long and can really score and Austin Simmons is a monster inside. They do need consistent play from their guards though to become more of a threat.

CA 60 - TH 39

Greenville at Maple Hill

The Spartans have a lot of bodies who play per their usual and a lot of size but don't have that great player. It's been a long while since they had that dominant guy, probably since Albe Hulick. Andrew Clark and Will Grimmond were both quality guys and they couldn't lead the Spartans any higher up the ranks so I don't see how this team could be better. They have a big guy in Bentley who can shoot it, they'll need more than that against Maple Hill. The Wildcats have the perfect ingredients to be a good team....confidence, good coach, uptempo style, hard nosed defense, a dominant big man (Sean Danaher), a good point guard (Dominic Prinzo) and a good scorer on the wing (David Briggs)

Greenville 55 - MH 73

Cairo Durham at Catskill

A defensive minded team against an offensive oriented squad. C-D lost Hunter Phillips their scorer and Piano their point guad but have some solid holdovers in Zimmerman, McGeever and the Halligon boys. Still they struggled at times to score last year and that was with Phillips. You know they'll be well coached and they are going to bring it on the defensive side but I think the Cats have just too much fire power (Taylor, Hall, Forrester) and size (Jones) in this one.

CD 50 - Cat 62

Hudson at Rensselaer

Hudson is 0-2 and really needs a win, the Rams are 3-0 and looking very good early on as they always do. Hudson has lots of talent (but not Jacori Anderson, who's not playing this year) but have lacked consistenty and also had to play the league's top 2 teams (ICC and MH) to open their season. The Rams got an easy one with Greenville but proved their worth over two pretty good teams in Cairo and Chatham. A lot of players doing good things for the Rams this year but the key is to stop Chris Britt. Hudson has the athletes to do that and they've got some kids that can score too like Jeff Crank and Larell Roberts. A big key will be a matchup up undersized, ultra quick football stars who play point guard for their teams, Nevin Sheldon and Mico Perez-De los Santos. I think Hudson is more talented top to bottom, but I think the Rams have the best player on the court and are really well coached. I'll go with Hudson only because I think they know how badly they need to avoid falling to 0-3.

Hud 71 - Rens 66

ICC at Chatham

This game could have been a match up of two of the elites if Josh Keyes had decided to play basketball instead of Indoor track. As it stands Chatham lost a close one to Rensselaer but still return some solid players. Brandon Johnson and Ian McGrath have both played well so far for Chatham, some other guys have been decent, Acheson needs to be better for them to reach their full potential but it's on Will Gauthier to take this team to the next level. He's tall and long and very athletic for a point guard. He shoots, he defensds, drives, dishes and rebounds, basically as a junior he's the best player in the league and has to carry this team night in and night out. ICC on the other hand is as well balanced as they come. Any given night seniors Chris Larm, Derick Horn or Josh Ingham could lead them in scoring, with the other two probably in double digits as well. Senior big man Tanner Wolfe is becoming more productive by the day and junior point guard Mitchell Niemeyer runs this offense to perfection and hit's threes. ICC is extremely well coached, always prepared and play that brutal (for opposing offenses) zone. If Gauthier can have a monster game and Johnson and Acheson battle downlow Chatham has a shot, but even then I think it's a long shot.

First set of Boys Basketball Games

One Patroon Conferece game on Monday and a trio on Tuesday gives us a good early feel for how the season is shaping up. Neither Cairo or Maple Hill have played yet, two teams who were top notch squads last year so watching out for how they fair in their start to season will be key.

MONDAY

Chatham at Rensselaer

Interesting first game match. A lot of people are looking at Chatham as a team who can be a real factor in both the league and section over the next two years. The decision of Josh Keyes to do indoor track intstead of basketball hurts this team a lot, but still with junior Will Gauthier running the show and versatile Brandon Johnson inside the Panthers should be good. The Rams lost a lot of good players and looked to rely heavily on a pair of seniors this year, Chris Britt and Mico Perez-De Los Santos who's been hampered by injuries on the court the past few years.

Chatham jumped out to a seven point lead after one quarter before the Rams cut their deficit to one at the half. Chatham pushed their lead back up to four heading into the final stanza but the Rams outscored Chatham 14-8 in the fourth quarter behind 10 points from Britt as Rensselaer pulled out a 53-51 win.

Britt finished with 17 points, scoring 4 times from the floor, once behind the arch and knocking down 6 of 7 free throws. De Los Santos added 12 for the Rams in the win. Gauthier scored a game high 20 points for Chatham, while Johnson added 12.

Chatham is going to look to get on track Friday when they face Taconic Hills who look as though they will struggle this year. The Rams head to Cairo on Friday in what should be an interesting tough, defensive battle.

TUESDAY

Hudson at Ichabod Crane

This was the battle everyone, including Chatham coaches, were watching on Tuesday. Two always tough teams battled out in what might be the most intense rivalry in the entire conference. The first big thing to point out is Jacori Anderson is not playing for Hudson. Anderson was voted by his peers last year as one of the most dominant shot blockers and rebounders in the league and his loss is huge to them.

Ichabod jumped out to an early lead but Hudson closed the gap and the game remained pretty close throughout. The Riders never seemed to lose control in the game and no matter how close it got it seemed as though ICC would hold on for the win. After some free throws late to help ice the game the Riders held on for a 50-40 victory.

Not shockingly the Riders were led by a trio of seniors who all scored in double digits. Derick Horn scored 12, Chris Larm added 11 and Josh Ingham threw in 10 including a pair of triples. Tanner Wolfe another senior added in 8 points and was a force on the boards while junior point guard Mitchell Niemeyer scored 7 points and dished out a number of quality assists.

Larell Roberts scored 11 points to lead Hudson while Lindon Alert and Jeff Crank scored 9 and 8 respectively. Sophomore Alert was very impressive running the point and attacking the hoop while Crank, a junior, plays under control and has a versatile game. Senior point guard Nevin Sheldon coming off a fantastic fall football season was held scoreless, but did provide a good defensive effort.

Ichabod returns to action on Thursday against a much improved Coxsackie Athens team. Hudson will host Maple Hill on Thursday on a big early season contest. If the Bluehawks fall to 0-2 this early in the season they could be in a rough spot.

Coxsackie Athens at Greenville

Two teams who finished near the bottom of the league last year, the big difference for this season is the Indians return most of their top talent while the Spartans lost most of their big guns. Greenville took an early lead before C-A went up by 1 before the half. After a defensive third quarter the two teams put up a lot of points in the fourth but Coxsackie held on for a 62-55 win.

Nate Tailleur and Dan Hanson each scored 14 points for the Indians while Kevin Wiley added 12. Austin Simmons put in 5 for C-A but his main strength is in his rebounding, shot blocking and defense. For Greenville Ross Bentley scored a game high 19, but John Hicks was the only other Spartan who reached double digits, scoring 11.

Coxsackie hosts ICC on Friday in what should be a great early test to see just how far they've come while Greenville heads to high scoring Catskill on Thursday.

Catskill at Taconic Hills

The Cats blew out the Titans 81-37 in both teams opening game of the year. Catskill jumped out to a 16 point lead after one quarter and carried that through the final three. The Titans were expected to struggle thsi year but this first loss is tough, while the Cats lost a good amount of talent but returned enough to be considered at least a middle to upper middle of the pack squad.

Jeremy Taylor led the Cats in scoring with 16 while Mike Beauford, Dean Forrester and Jason Jones each added 12. Mike Jacobsen scored 13 for the Titans in the loss.

Up next for Catskill is a home stand against Greenville on Thursday, while Taconic Hills heads to Chatham on Friday in what could be a tough game.

ICC-Germantown Bball Scrimmage

Had a chance to take in the ICC-GTown boys basketball scrimmage today at ICC. The Riders are considered one of the better teams in the Patroon Conference this year and an above average Class A team while the Clippers are probably the early favorites in the C.H.V.L. and the favorites in Class D.

The teams played six, 8 minute quarters with the final 2 being running block. ICC won the first quarer 14-9 as both teams played their starters. In the second quarter each team kept their starters in and Germantown won 25-16. In the third the Riders put in subs while G-Town kept in their starters and ICC won 14-12. In the fourth the Riders put their starters in against most of the Clipps starters. Eventually the rest of the Clippers starting unti came in but ICC won 9-2. A mix of subs and starters for the Clippers played over the final 2 quarters while ICC relied on subs. The Riders won 7-6 in the 5th and lost 16-13 in the final eight minutes. The overall score would have been Ichabod Crane 73, Germantown 70.

Overall it felt pretty close and there was a noticeable difference in size between the Riders and Germantown. The Clipps had just one player who seemed big enough to match up with the Riders front line. Both teams could use some work at the free throw line and the teams could tighten up their ball handling and passing, but it is still early in the year.

Some notes on each team-

Germantown: It's obvious the offensive burden will fall onto the shoulders of Cody Broast, Thomas Griffin and Larry Niebling just as it did last year. Germantown has more players on it's roster this year and has lots of nice pieces who can defend and shoot, but it's going to be up to those 3 to lead this team. Broast is a fantastic scorer who showed a great mid range game in the scrimmage. Niebling is great at pushing the tempo and nailing threes while Griffin didn't seem to have that same killer instict I saw last year. He's stronger than most other wings he'll play against but he seemed to hang around outside and move the ball a bit more than last year. They need him to regain his aggressiveness to reach their full potential. The big thing I noticed was last year the Clippers really pushed the tempo but they didn't do it as much here, against a bigger team who sat back in a zone. This team will be at it's best when pushing the ball for quick scores or taking advantage of speed mismatches when team's go man, but against big teams and or teams who play zone they need to get up and down the floor and Niebling is the perfect point guard for that role if they let him be like last year.

Ichabod Crane: The Riders have a lot of size and a lot of bodies but I'd be surprised to see ICC play more than 7 or 8 guys this year. It's obvious seniors Chris Larm, Derick Horn and Josh Ingham are the leaders. Larm isn't super tall but he's very strong and a fantstic rebounder and clean up man. I'd love to see them feed him in the post a bit more to see what he can do on his own. Horn has good size, he shoots, he rebounds and he drives well, he's a mismatch. Ingham is a hustler, he gets into his man on defense, drives to the lane hard and can get hot from outside. They've got Tanner Wolfe, he's a big kid but he still seems to be adjusting to the speed of varsity. I like Mitchell Niemeyer, I have since he was an 8th grader on JV and it's his time to run the show. He is skinny and not super quick or athletic but he plays very smart and with great pace. He's a safe player who will get the ball where it needs to go. I like Joe Fey and Tyler Zeh, both are sophomores and are strong and can be be effective downlow. Ricky Pallozzi has a chance to earn some playing time, he's a scoring point guard more in the mold of more recent ICC points. The big thing for the Riders is they have been uptempo the past few years and I'm not sure who they have to push it this year. Even the Rider bigs handled the ball at times in this scrim but they need someone to step up and handle and create like Dalton Austin-Michaud, Kevin Knack and Sean Shattenkirk have over the past few years. My gut feeling is Ingham ends up in that role and if he can gel into that the Riders will be much more dangerous.

Week in Review: Girl's Soccer

With just two teams remaining in their quests for Section II glory both New Lebanon and Chatham advanced to their respective classes Final Four, but just one would move into the finals.

FINAL FOUR

New Lebanon v. Whitehall

The Tigers run deep into the Class D playoffs ended at the hands of Whitehall 1-0. The two teams battled evenly through two full quarters before Whitehall struck just before the end of the first of two overtimes.

New Lebanon outshot their opponents and put 11 shots on goal but could not put any into the back of the net. Brittany St. Clair fired a ball to the far post past Tiger's goalie Jill Risko for the game's only goal. Risko made six saves in the loss as the Tigers season came to a close.

Chatham v. Galway

Fresh off their upset of top seeded Hoosick Falls the Panthers continued their run and moved themselves into the Class CC finals with a convincing 2-0 victory over Galway. The Panthers got a goal in each half as the defense held strong for the win.

Fourteen minutes into the contest Cailey Nieto got her team on the board with an unassisted goal. Then with 19 minutes left in the contest the Panthers put the contest away with a goal by Regina Behn off an Alyssa Keeler assist.

Chatham fired off 16 shots compared to Galway's 12 while Brittany Lossow made 6 stops earning the win.

CLASS CC FINALS

Chatham v. Cambridge

The Panthers magical run came to a close in the Class CC finals as they fell to the Indians 2-0. Cambridge scored a goal late in each half to earn the victory.

With under a minute left in the first and the game knotted at 0-0 the Indians got a goal by Cheyanne Hall. That goal would hold up until there was nine minutes left in the contest when Cambridge iced the game on a goal by Molly Lauver.

Chatham fired off five shots and two corners in the contest while Brittany Lossow made 8 stops in defeat.

Check back next week when we take a look at each our local team's seasons, in our Season in Review.

Week in Review: Football

Chatham was the lone Columbia County team left in their quest for a sectional title. On Saturday night in Stillwater the Panthers faced off against Class C's other top seed, the Panthers of Hoosick Falls in the Super Bowl.

Also last week the Class B Reinfurt Division All Stars were selected.

Hoosick Falls v. Chatham

Two undefeated and state ranked Panthers squared off under the lights in Stillwater on Friday and the Panthers from Chatham fell in the final seconds, 17-13. Chatham got on the board first in the open quarter before falling behind 14-7 at the half. Chatham scored again in the fourth but fell on a last second field goal.

In the opening quarter Tanner Niles connected with David Coons on a 20 yard passing score and Mike Gilbert added the extra point as Chatham jumped to a lead. The scored remained the same through the first quarter and into the second when Hoosick Falls scored on a passing and a rushing score to take the lead heading into the half.

In the fourth quarter Chatham was down a score and got even on a Josh Keyes touchdown run, his first and only of the game. Mike Gilbet added the extra point to tie up the game.

Chatham had possession late but was unable to get the first down and had to punt the ball away. Hoosick Falls moved up the field and with under three seconds left set up for a potential game winning field goal. Quin Rasmus nailed his first career field goal, a 39 yarder to end Chatham's fantastic run and give Hoosick Falls the title.

Keyes was "limited" to just over 150 yards on the ground while the rest of the vaunted Chatham rushing attack was held under 50 as Hoosick Falls stacked the box with defenders, daring Chatham to beat them in the air. Tanner Niles completed 5 passes on the night, including one for a score.

Chatham is expected to lose 17 players to graduation but are slated to return the likes of Keyes in the backfield, Niles at quarterback and Ian McGrath on defense and in the backfield.

Barksdale despite missing 2 games due to injury this year earned the Most Valuable Player award for the Reinfurt Division. His ability to pass, run and also play defense made him one of the most dangerous and versatile players in the league.

Nevin Sheldon was selected first team on both offense and defense for his play at wide receiver and corner back.

Jordan Smith was one of the top offensive lineman in all of Class B this year while Kevin Gorman was a consistent kicker.

Tayron Bryant starred all over the field for the Bluehawks and was rewarded as a special teams player on the first team.

The second team all makes sense with three good defensive players from the Bluehawks along with McSween who had a good year receiving and rushing for Hudson.

Week in Review: Field Hockey & Volleyball

FIELD HOCKEY

Ichabod Crane v. Glens Falls

The Riders made the long trek to Glens Falls as the third seeded Riders looked to move themselves into the finals, but fell to second seeded Glens Falls. The only thing we've heard is that the Riders fell but despite our best efforts we could not even get a score from the contest.

All things considered the Riders rebounded well from some key losses off last year's squad and put together a solid regular season and a nice post season run.

VOLLEYBALL

Two local teams opened up sectional play in volleyball action with both teams losing in the first round.

Hudson Falls v. Ichabod Crane

The fourth seeded Riders in Class A hosted fifth seeded Hudson Falls but fell in straight games 3-0. The Riders lost 25-22, 25-17 and 25-14.

ICC won the Patroon Conference title with a 18-5 overall record and are slated to lose 7 seniors off this years team.

Hudson v. Ravena

In Class B the seventh seeded Bluehawks traveled to second seeded Ravena and fell 3-0. The scores were 25-2, 25-5 and 25-11.

Hudson finished 11-10 overall, 10-8 in the league and are expected to lose 7 seniors off this years team and return just one player next year.

Three local teams started sectional play and after a week of action only one remained standing. Top seeded Ichabod Crane in Class A who was gearing up to play the third seed from the south Mohonasen in Queensbury with a spot in the finals on the line.

Also this week the Patroon Conference announced it's annual All Conference list which we will discuss further down the page.

Mohonasen v. Ichabod Crane

Facing the defending Class A champion Mighty Warriors the Riders played the Suburban Council squad dead even through 80 full minutes and much of the overtime. It was just one small breakdown less than a minute into the first overtime that cost the Riders their shot at a sectional title.

Forty seconds into the first overtime Mohon's Gianluca Puorto ripped a one time volley off a Rider defensive clearance that found it's way into the back of the net propelling Mohon to a 1-0 victory.

The loss ends a fantastic Rider season that included a Patroon Conference title and a top seed in sectionals.

REACTION:

I'm a bit shocked Zwoboda got MVP, I think there were a fair amount of guys who could have been voted ahead of him. He's a good player and certainly was in the discussion but his selection did catch me off guard and from talking to a few players around the league they were surprised as well.

I can't argue much with the first team other than thinking there had to be a way to get Kyle Kline in there. I know he didn't have a ton of "quality goals" this year, but when a team prepared to face ICC I am pretty sure Kline had to be at the top of the list of things the opposing coaches would key in on.

Also I am a little surprised Mike Gilbert wasn't on the list, but with one sweeper already on the list, Nick Boardman, I guess it makes some sense.

The only other player that I thought I'd see was David Briggs from Maple Hill, a kid I thought was in serious contention for MVP but instead made neither team. Was he one of the upperclassmen for Maple Hill that was suspended? If so that shows why he didn't make it on either team, but I was under the impression it was a suspension and not kicked off the team so I thought I'd still see him somewhere on the lists.

Second team makes sense for the most part, I won't disagree really. I thought maybe Mitchell Albrecht would slide on from TH over his teammate but we're splitting hairs there. Other names I was just surprised not to see included Tyler Mashaw from Chatham, along with Steve Domino and Alex Mastrianni. Domino did a lot for this team, I think he and Basile were probably pretty close in importance to the Riders while Mastrianni was good in goal, the stats show it. My bet is Dellamater had to show more in his games and that bumped him up as people often times just credited the Rider defense for their keepers stats.

Andy Fishman and Chris Gagliardi each had nice years for Cairo and both were in discussion for second team I'm sure. Sanchez made first team from Greenville but George Harvey didn't even get on the second team, I think if Sanchez is a first teammer than Harvey has to be on the second.

Local Football: Chatham headed to the Super Bowl

Only one local football team was still alive in their quest for a Super Bowl berth this week as Chatham faced off with Cambridge. Hudson, Taconic Hills and Ichabod Crane were each slated to play one last cross over game against another team who was also eliminated from their respective playoffs.

Despite our best efforts we've been unable to find out any results regarding the Ichabod Crane-Hoosic Valley game that was slated to be played on Thursday.

Cambridge v. Chatham

Taking on one of the more storied small school football programs in all of New York state the Panthers came in as the higher seed but considered a slight underdog to Cambridge who was actually ranked higher in the latest New York State Poll.

The Panthers took care of business on the ground as usual and also kept their opponents off guard while attempting 9 passes as Chatham won 31-14 and get ready for their second Super Bowl appearance in the last three years.

As he has all season long Josh Keyes paced the Panther offense with over 300 yards on the ground. In the opening quarter he got his team on board first with a 35 yard touchdown run, followed by a Mike Gilbert extra point.

The Panthers then found themselves in an unusual position as Cambridge went to the air and scored twice before the end of the first quarter as Chatham found themselves down 14-7. In the second quarter the Panthers went back to Keyes again and he responded with two scores as Chatham went up 19-14 and would never look back.

Coming out of the half the Panthers added two more scores as Keyes ran in a 30 yarder and Ryan Coons added a 60 yard trot. Coons rushed for over 130 yards on the ground in addition to Keyes massive total.

Chatham also threw the ball an unusual 9 times with junior quarterback Tanner Niles completing 4 of them. The vaunted Panther defense continued their strong season of play after having a rough first quarter. The Chatham defense has allowed just one team all season to score on them 3 times in one game.

Up next for the Panthers is a highly anticipated showdown against fellow unbeaten Hoosick Falls. The Panthers will come in as the slight underdog as Hoosick Falls was ranked 7th in the latest New York State poll while Chatham was 12th.

Hudson v. Cobleskill

The Bluehawks who season ended earlier than they had hoped had a cross over game this week against Cobleskill. Hudson had faced the Bulldogs once already this year and came away with an 18-13 win.

In this contest Hudson scored first before falling behind and having to then score last to pull out an exciting 22-18 win. Hudson got on the board first when Talib Barksdale hit Tayron Bryant on a 70 yard touchdown strike. Mike Black added the two point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Cobleskill responded with a touchdown in the second quarter and two more in the third for an 18-8 lead before Hudson finally got on board again. Barksdale hooked up with the always dangerous Nevin Sheldon this time and Bryant added the two point conversion to pull the Bluehawks within two.

In the fourth Barksdale hooked up with Bryant again for the game winning touchdown as Hudson pulled ahead for good.

Keep an eye on www.ccSCOOP.com after all our teams have completed play for a look at who the Bluehawks are expected to lose and return next year.

Taconic Hills v. Mechanicville

The Titans season came to a close this week when they fell 21-20 in a heart breaker to Mechanicville. The Titans got touchdowns by Nick Warren and Nolan Boice on the ground while Spencer Winter added a blocked punt for a score.

With under a minute to play Mechanicville marched down the field for a score that pulled them within one. Rather than go for the kick and the tie Mechanicville went for two and converted to pull out the win.

Boys Sectionals: Just one left standing from Columbia County

Three local teams made it to sectionals this year with Ichabod Crane leading the way as the #1 South team in Class A and the Riders received a first round BYE. Chatham who had a strong regular season was seeded second in Class CC and also received a BYE into round two. New Lebanon the eighth seed in Class D coming from the Central Hudson Valley League had a first round match up before playing again on Friday.

New Lebanon v. Fort Ann

After a stirring 3-0 victory in the first round the Tigers knew they'd be fighting an uphill battle on Friday as they would square off with top seeded Fort Ann. Fort Ann scored two first half goals and dominated the action for most of the first half. With under five minutes left the Tigers struck to draw within one on a Todd Ferguson goal.

In the second half the Tigers came out fired up and looked primed to pull a potentially major upset. However 8 minutes into the half Fort Ann took advantage of pressure in front of the Tigers goal to push their lead to two.

New Lebanon scored another goal by Ferguson with time winding down. With precious little time left on the clock the Tigers had one last shot with a free kick just outside the box that found it's way on goal but a good save by the Fort Ann keeper preserved the win for Fort Ann.

It was a good run for the Tigers who did not have a typical "New Lebanon year" this season as they did not compete at the top of the league. Still a first round sectional win followed by a near upset of the top seed is a solid finish to their season.

Hoosick Falls v. Chatham

Although they did not capture at least a share of the Patroon Conference title for what would have been the third consecutive year the Chatham Panthers still had a good year and were seeded second in Class CC. Facing the seventh seed Hoosick Falls on Friday the Panthers seed was not enough as they were upset 4-1.

Hoosick Falls dominated the game from the get go and despite some early Chatham chances were the first ones to get on the scoreboard off a corner kick 16 minutes into the game. The Panthers had a chance to even things up when they sent a long ball past the Hoosick Falls defender but Will Gauthier got to it as the keeper charged and cleared it up the sideline. Tyler Mashaw took control of the clearance and sent a ball right back into the box with the defense scrambling. Gauthier headed the ball towards the net but the keeper made a terrific one handed stop to keep it out of the net.

Hoosick Falls ran an effective off sides trap in the first half helping to nuetralize any offensive efforts by the Panthers. With the lead and only 40 minutes to play the seventh seeded Panthers employed five full time defenders and another midfielder assigned to defend in an attemp to hold on for the 1-0 victory.

Another corner kick resulted in another Hoosick Falls goal in the second half before they added a third on some defensive miscues later in the half. Chatham finally got on board when Todd Van Alstyne drove a free kick low through an eight man wall and past the keeper.

Hoosick Falls responded with yet another goal despite their defensive formation as they shocked all of Class CC with the upset victory.

Keep an eye out of our Season in Review after all teams have completed post season play where we will take a look at the players Chatham will be losing and returning next season.

Catholic Central v. Ichabod Crane

The Riders came in fresh while their opponents had played a game just days earlier and ICC took full advantage taking control from the opening kickoff. The Riders dominated possession and quality chances for the full 80 minutes as the Crusaders never truly threatened.

With 27 minutes on the clock in the first half, ICC freshman Tyler Jablanski crossed the ball into the middle where it was played off to Mitchell Niemeyer who finished to give the Riders a 1-0 lead. Less than seven minutes later the Riders sent a fantastic ball through the CCHS defense and onto the running foot of Kyle Kline who calmly touched it past the opposing keeper as he's done so many times this season.

Those two goals would be all the Riders would need as their defense completely shut down Catholic Central. Led by sweeper Nick Boardman and stopper Steven Domino the ICC defense continued it's string of stellar play.

The victory moves the Riders into the next round where they will face either Mohonasen or Scotia Glenville next Thursday at 2 at a nuetral site in Queensbury.

Boys Soccer: Sectional Results

A number of local teams made Sectionals and began play this week. In Class A the Patroon Conference champions, Ichabod Crane was given the #1 South seed. The Riders will open play Friday night against #4 North Catholic Central. I'll be at that game tonight just as I was at the Chatham Panthers game today, so check back tomorrow to see my write ups on those two games. As just stated I was at the Chatham game today as the highly favored #2 seed in Class CC fell to seventh seeded Hoosick Falls.

Also in Class CC is Maple Hill who was seeded fourth and opened up Thursday against fifth seeded Cambridge. In Class B Coxsackie Athens was seeded 8th, Cairo Durham fourth and Greenville seventh. All three Class B teams opened post season play on Thursday. In Class D New Lebanon got things going on Wednesday with a first round win and return to action on Friday.

New Lebanon v. Salem

The ninth seeded Tigers headed to Salem on Wednesday and came away with a 3-0 upset win. There have been varying reports on who provided the offense for the Tigers but the important thing is New Lebanon jumped on Salem 2-0 in the first half before added another in the second half.

The victory moves New Lebanon into the next round where they will have to face top seeded Fort Ann on Friday. Once we have results in from that game we will let everyone know if the Tigers can continue their quest.

Fonda v. Cairo Durham

Fourth seeded Cairo propelled themselves into the next round with an easy 5-0 victory over Fonda on Thursday. Cairo scored just a single goal in the first half before putting up four more in the second.

Kody Koening scored a hat trick for the Mustangs while Chris Gagliardi and Zach McGrath each added goals. Dalton Phillips, Stephen Zwoboda, McGrath, Matt Hines and Gagliardi all picked up assists. Cory Gransbury made 2 stops in goal for the 'Stangs.

Up next for Cairo is a match up against fifth seeded Schuylerville on Saturday.

Cobleskill Richmondville v. Greenville

Seventh seeded Greenville held on for a 2-1 win on Thursday over Cobleskill. George Harvey converted a penalty kick in the first half before the Bulldogs evened things before halftime. In the second half Mike Sanchez headed in a corner from James Tschinkel for the win. Tucker Lewis made 3 stops in the win.

Greenville will next face Broadalbin Perth on Saturday night.

Johnstown v. Coxsackie Athens

The eighth seeded Indians hosted the Sir Bills on Thursday and the ninth seed came away with a 3-1 upset victory. Felipe Plotze opened the scoring for the Indians before Johnstown evened the game before half.

In the second half Coxsackie missed a penalty kick and things went down hill after that as Johnstown scored two unanswered goals to advance to the next round.

Cambridge v. Maple Hill

Despite some struggles this season Maple Hill was still seeded fourth and opened up sectional play looking strong than their seed with a 3-0 victory. The Wildcats scored a lone goal in the first 40 minutes before putting in two more in the second half.

Adam Fuller netted 2 goals for MH while Eric Bureau scored the last. Steven Sepkowski and Jake Yager each picked up assists while Derek Van Alstyne made six saves in goal.

Up next for Maple Hill is a game next week, more than likely against top seeded Voorheesville.

Girls Soccer: Sectional Results

A number of local teams made sectionals and began their quest for a sectional title this week. In Class D the New Lebanon Tigers were seeded second and after a first round bye were set to start action Friday evening. Two local teams will compete in Class C as Chatham was seeded 8th while Maple Hill got the second seed after a second place finish in the Patroon Conference. Both Coxsackie-Athens and Greenville would be competing in Class B while Patroon Conference champions Ichabod Crane were awarded the sixth seed in Class A.

Four of the six local teams got their sectional bids underway on Thursday.

Broadalbin Perth v. Coxsackie Athens

After a successful regular season in which they knocked off both Greenville and ICC this year the Indians were seeded 8th and hosted the Patriots on Thursday. Broadalbin scored a goal in the first half and added two more in the second half en route to a 3-0 win.

Cheyenne Guisti recorded a hat trick for the Patriots while Tori Marrotta added a pair of assists. Jenna Morse made 5 stops in goal for the Indians in the loss.

Cohoes v. Greenville

Fifth seeded Greenville hosted the Tigers of Cohoes and advanced to the second round with a 4-1 victory on Thursday. Greenville jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half before each team scored one goal in the second.

As they have all year long Taylor Anne Young and Alex Van Auken led the charge for the Spartans as each player recorded a pair of goals and an assist. Bonnie Harvey made 3 saves in goal for Greenville to help earn the win.

Up next for the Spartans is a big match against fourth seeded Stillwater Friday at 6.

Lake George v. Chatham

The eighth seeded Panthers took care of business on their home turf on Thursday with a dominating 6-0 victory over ninth seeded Lake George. Chatham exploded for five first half goals before adding in one more in the second half.

Cailey Nieto continues to lead the Chatham offensive with 3 goals and an assist while Taylor Wenk added a goal and an assist. Regina Behn and Abby Wheeler each added a goal while Caroline Connor and Alyssa Keeler each had an assist. Brittany Lossow made 11 stops in goal for Chatham in the win.

The Panthers now must fight an up hill battle as they now face top seeded Hoosick Falls on Saturday morning.

Gloversville v. Ichabod Crane

After a 14-1-1 regular season the Riders were seeded a surprisingly low sixth in Class A and began their quest for a title hosting 11th seeded Gloversville. Despite dominating the game for nearly the entire time the Riders fell 1-0 on a goal in the second overtime.

The Riders fired shots on goal at a rapid rate but struggled to finish despite a number of quality chances. Headers, deep shots, short shots, give and goes, through balls, nothing could get the ball into the back of the net for ICC.

After 80 minutes of play the game headed to the first overtime and the teams continued the scoreless drought through 10 more minutes. Early in the second overtime Melissa Snyder finished a corner kick that would be enough to lead the Dragons to the upset.

Despite just having one goal on the scoreboard each team hada goal called back. The Riders looked to have finished a corner kick in the second half but a brief celebration the officials decided the ball was in possession of the goalie before having it knocked out. Gloversville took a corner kick late in the game that found the back of the net but was disallowed after it was deemed the ball had crossed the endline and then curved back into play.

The shocking loss ends the Riders season as they are set to lose 11 players. We'll go into the players lost and key returners more after all teams have completed post season play.

NEXT ROUND

After first round byes the New Lebanon Tigers play Friday night while Maple Hill gets underway on Saturday. Greenville's win pushed them into the next round and were also scheduled to play Friday night. We'll update the 3 teams progress this weekend.

ICC Lady Riders match the boys, Win Patroon Conference title...and other Girl's results

The Patroon Conference girl's soccer season came to a close on Monday with a slate of four games including two that had implications on who would win the league crown. A loss or draw by Maple Hill would give Ichabod Crane the title no matter their result later in the day, a Maple Hill victory would force the Riders to need a win to take home sole possession of the crown.

Greenville v. Ichabod Crane

With Maple Hill's victory over Taconic Hills earlier in the day the Riders new coming into their evening contest against a very good Greenville team that they would need a win to earn their 5th consecutive league title. After a quick start the Riders faltered but held on for a 4-2 victory to bring home the crown.

A mere 1:2o into the game the Riders set the tone as Shana Barry lofted a corner kick to the far post where Morgan Van Alstyne headed into the back of the net. The Riders kept up the pressure firing shots on goal but not being able to break through.

The constant pressure on the Greenville defense eventually paid off as Haley Ooms made her way up the sideline and crossed the ball. The cross was just far enough from the goal to give Greenville keeper Bonnie Harvey too far of a distance to cover, leaving her out of position. Cassidy Lester got a leg to the ball and send it up and over Harvey for a 2-0 lead.

With 5:50 left in the first half ICC put themselves well out in front with another goal. The ball was played into the box and Harvey charged with Alex Armstrong bearing down on her. Armstrong took a quick shot that went off Harvey and bounced free, Armstrong took full advantage but following up her own shot and pushing the lead to 3-0.

In the second half Greenville upped their attack right from the start. Michelle Schoenborn was cutting through defenders with half an hour left, but couldn't finish as Alicia Mink charged from the goal to make a save. With 24:30 left in the game Greenville finally got on the board on a miscue by the Riders defense. Taylor Anne Young crossed a ball into the box but the Riders had a chance to clear, but the clearance attempt went straight up into the air. Mink went catch but Schoenborn challenged her and as the ball fell free Schoenborn finished to cut the deficit to two.

Six minutes later the Riders lead was sliced to 3-2 when Alex Van Auken struck a fantastic ball from the top of the box up and over Mink and into the upper part of the net. With momentum all Spartans the game's outcome was in doubt, however the Riders would not let the title slip from their grasp.

Shanna Barry took a corner and sent it high into the box, the ball was headed up and it looked like Harvey had it her hands, but the ball slipped free and seemed to cross the line for a goal as the officials stopped play and ICC celebrated. After a long break in the action a Greenville player was red carded and a penalty kick was awarded. ICC senior sweeper Lacey Powers stepped to the penalty spot and calmly put the ball into the back of the net and gave her team a lead they would never relinquish.

The victory improves the Riders record to 14-1-1 and it seemed in great shape for a high sectional seed. However on Tuesday, the Riders were awarded just the sixth seed in Class A and are currently scheduled to face #11 Gloversville.

The Spartans who led the league for the first half of the season but struggled down the stretch were awarded the fifth seed in Class B and are scheduled to host #12 Cohoes on Wednesday.

Maple Hill v. Taconic Hills

The Wildcats took care of their end of business with a 8-1 victory on Monday. Their win gave them a chance to win the title with a slip up later in the day by the Riders, a slip up that never came. Maple Hill finishes the season 13-1-2, good for second place in the league.

All the scoring was done in the first half, as the two teams combined for 9 goals in the opening 40 minutes. Meeghan Arno scored 2 goals and added four assists while Sierra Legge added 2 and 2. Cheryl Bruen, Taylor Czajkowski, Somer Connolly and Theresa Fuller each added goals. The lone Titan goal came from Hara Aoki-Saffer on a Emma Gryner assist.

Maple Hill was awarded the #2 seed in Class CC and is scheduled to face the winner of #7 Berne Knox - #10 Hoosic Valley.

Hudson v. Cairo Durham

The Mustangs hosted the Bluehawks on Monday and the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie through 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtimes. Hailey Hollenbeck scored Hudson's lone goal before Brianna Calcavecchia evened the game with a goal for Cairo.

Neither team made sectionals as Hudson finished 3-12-1 while Cairo finished with a record of 4-11-1.

Chatham v. Coxsackie Athens

These two teams were slated to match up on Monday but we could not find results. The Chatham coach has sent in scores after every game, but I never received them and it seems like neither did the Register Star or Times Union. This game could have been a crucial one heading into sectionals in terms of seedings.

Coxsackie Athens was awarded the 8th seed in Class B and is scheduled to host #9 Broadalbin Perth on Wednesday. Chatham was also seeded 8th, but in Class CC and is schelued to host #9 Lake George on Thursday.

More video from Chatham football

Chatham Defense announced

Just trying to get a feel for how video comes on here, I apologize ahead of time it's horrible.

Chatham romps in 1st Round win

When writing a story about the Chatham football team you have a difficult time figuring out what angle to take. Do you keep it simple and talk about another dominate Panther victory? Highlight stud player Josh Keyes who continues to shatter records nearly every game he plays? What about the offensive line who opens those holes for Keyes, or other running backs like David and Ryan Coon who could start and probably dominate for nearly every other Class C school in the section? Maybe the coaching staff who consistently has their team ready every week?

In this case you could have picked any one of those and been on the right track. The Panthers the top seed from the south division dominated the fourth seed from the north, Corinth, 62-0 in the driving rain Friday night. The Panthers scored in every quarter while the defense shut out the Tomahawks. Chatham put up 21 in the first, 20 in the second, 13 in the fourth and 8 more points in the final quarter.

Josh Keyes ran for close to 200 yards and 3 touchdowns. Don't overlook the fact that Keyes also set the tone from the teams first kickoff by leveling an opponent with a monster hit, the first of many. Keyes also forced 2 fumbles with his ferocious hits.

How about that offensive line? All they did was clear the way for over 400 yards of offense, all on the ground.

David Coon and Ryan Coon combined for close to 100 yards and 3 scores on the ground as well.

Sometime's it's tough to quantify what the coaching staff does but it was clearly audible all Friday night. Time and time again you could hear Panther coach Mark Dwyer shouting out calls to his defense on what Corinth would do, and time and time again he was correct putting his team in great shape to keep the shutout.

All in all it was a dominate performance by the Panthers who put the pedal to the metal and didn't let up til the final whistle. After four Keyes runs resulted in two first downs on their first drive David Coon finished it up with a score.

On the ensuing defensive possession the Panthers forced a fumble and Ryan Coon recovered setting up a 21 yard Keyes run for a touchdown on fourth down. After a Corinth punt with 2:20 on the clock Keyes took the first play 59 yards for another touchdown.

In the second quarter Ian McGrath picked off a pass to put his team in scoring position again. Less than a minute later Ryan Coon scampered 20 yards to put his team up 28-0. Again less than a minute later the Panthers made a play, this time Keyes laying a monster hit and causing a fumble on the one yard line. David Coon ran in the one yard score shortly after. Chatham would score one more time before the half, this time a Keyes 39 yard run.

In the second half Tanner Niles snuck in a one yard quarterback keeper before Alex Mishkin added a rushing score in each of the final two quarters to close out the win.

Mike Gilbert added six extra points in the win while Miskin ran in one two point conversion.

Up next for Chatham will be Cambridge, coming off a 41-0 trouncing of Voorheesville. The Indians have one of the most vaunted programs in all of Section II and will come in with just one loss, to #1 North Seed Hoosick Falls. That game is slated to be played next Saturday at 7 pm in Stillwater.

Week in Review: Football

All four local teams went into action this weekend with their season's on the line. Undefeated Chatham looked to continue their winning ways in the first round of the Class C Sectionals on Friday, just like Hudson looked to do Saturday in the Class B tournament.

Taconic Hills participated in a cross over game on Friday, which is for teams who did not make the sectional playoffs to play one last game this year. The Titans however have petitioned Section II in hopes that they can play another game, a long shot at best. Ichabod Crane competing in their first ever season of 11 man varsity football was looking to end their season with their first win in a cross over game against Class D Whitehall on Friday.

Corinth v. Chatham

Check the site for our full recap in our Game of the Week of Chatham's dominating 62-0 victory over Corinth.

Watervliet v. Taconic Hills

The Titans finished off their season with a bang evening their record at 4-4 while defeating Watervliet 36-10. The Titans surrendered the game's first three points before scoring the next 30 en route to the win.

Down 3-0 James McDarby got the Titans rolling returning an interception 60 yards for a touchdown and then having Chris McKay run in the two point conversion. McDarby helped his team further by hauling in a 41 yard pass from Nick Warren for another score which McKay then added two more points on.

Nolan Boice and Chris Filli each added rushing scores in the third quarter and Warren added a big one of his own in the fourth to lead the Titans to the win.

Whitehall v. Ichabod Crane

The Riders first varsity season came to a close Friday night after a disappointing 52-0 loss to Whitehall. In a battle of winless teams Whitehall scored 22 points in both the first and second quarters before adding the final 8 in the fourth.

Hudson v. Hudson Falls

This game was to be played Saturday afternoon, and as of yet we have not heard a score. As soon as we do we'll be sure to post our thoughts and reactions on the game.

ICC falls but still win's league title

Ichabod Crane v. Greenville

The Riders traveled to Greenville on Friday for their final regular season contest of the year with the Patroon Conference title wrapped up. Still playing to help their sectional seeding the Riders did the opposite of that with a 3-0 defeat to the Spartans.

George Harvey, Mike Sanchez and Nick Salzer each scored in the second half as the Spartans pulled the upset.

ICC finishes off their regular season 13-2-1 as they await to see where they will be seeding in the Section II Class A tournament.

Taconic Hills v. Maple Hill

The Wildcats scored a pair of goals in each en route to a 4-0 win over the Titans on Friday. Jake Johnson scored a pair goals and added an assist while Jacob Yager added the other two goals. Steven Sepowski and Matt Palmer each added assists.

Jake Littman made 7 stops in goal in the loss while Jeremy Van Alstyne made 2 for Maple Hill.

The Titans finish off their season 1-15 in league play.

Cairo Durham v. Hudson

The Mustangs capped their regular season with a dominating 5-0 victory Friday in Hudson. Kyle Gibson scored 2 goals for the 'Stangs while Peter Zoellner, Steven Szwoboa and Chris Gagliardi each added one.

Brett Delamater and Jordan Sohorta combined to make 9 saves in the loss for Hudson who ends their season 1-15.

1 game down,1 to go for most Girl's teams

On Thursday the Patroon Conference featured a slate of four games with major league and sectional seeding implications. Ichabod Crane held onto the slimmest of leads over Maple Hill with any loss knocking the Riders out of first. Greenville, Coxsackie Athens and Chatham are all in solid position as the season winds down and the teams are playing for seeding purposes. Chatham had a great chance to make a statement against Maple Hill on Thursday while Greenville can take a major step forward Monday with a victory over ICC. C-A had the chance to make the biggest statement as they played Greenville Thursday and Chatham on Monday.

Catskill v. Ichabod Crane

Week in Review: Football

We had four Columbia County teams taking part in three games this week, with ICC heading to Chatham, Hudson playing for playoff position and Taconic Hills looking to play spoiler. We'll take a look at the other local games later tonight or tomorrow as Coxsackie-Athens and Cairo-Durham faced off as well and Rensselaer faced off with Lake George, considered by many the second best team in Section II Class D behind only the Rams.

Ichabod Crane v. Chatham

In a match up of one winless team (ICC) and one undefeated team (Chatham) the game went as expected with the Panthers winning 69-0. The Panthers put 41 points on the board in the first quarter and added 14 in both the second and third quarters.

Josh Keyes scored the game's first two touchdown's but not on the ground like usual. Instead Keyes's returned a fumble on the defensive side before taking a punt back for another score. Keyes added two more touchdowns later in the game and finished with four scores, 114 yards rushing on just three carries.

Ryan Coon added two scores on the ground as David Coon, Gilbert Rivera and Alex Mishkin each scored one rushing touchdown a piece. Tanner Niles attempted just two passes the whole day with the second completed to Ian McGrath for a touchdown. Mike Gilbert converted on 9 extra points in the contest.

Chatham finishes off it's regular season 7-0 and as the top seed in Section II Class C and will host 5-2 Corinth on Friday at 7. The Riders fell to 0-7 and will finish off their season at home against Whitehall on Friday.

Albany Academy v. Hudson

In a game that would determine the third seed in the Class B tournament from their division, the Bluehawks came from behind in an absolute barn burner to defeat Albany Academy 48-46. The contest also featured two of the most exciting players in Class B with Nevin Sheldon from Hudson and Zay Richardson from Albany Academy. The two players combined for 7 scores, five by Richardson but it was Sheldon who would score the go ahead touchdown for Hudson to help earn the win. The victory improved Hudson to 5-2 and earned them that third seed from the Reinfurt Division and will head to Hudson Falls (4-3) on Saturday for a 1 pm game.

Right off the opening kickoff Hudson got on the board when Tayron Bryant took the kick to the house for an 80 yard score. Brian McSween ran in the two point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Richardson responded with a short run for Albany Academy but the conversion was no good.

In the second quarter Richardson scored again before Hudson responded with a 25 yard run by Nevin Sheldon. Before the half the Cadets scored again for an 18-14 lead.

Coming out of the half Hudson fired back scoring two touchdowns in between an Academy score. Talib Barksdale ran in a quarterback keeper before converting on the conversion with another run. After the Cadets score Barksdale found McSween for a 70 yard touchdown as Hudson went up 30-22.

After combining for 52 points over the first three quarters the two teams would put up a remarkable 40 more in the final stanza. Academy struck first with another Richardson run before McSween answered with a 33 yard run of his own. After another Richardson score it was against McSween who found the endzone for Hudson, this time on a 57 yard pass from Barksdale.

The Cadets would run in one more score to retake the lead by two and put the pressure back on the Bluehawks. Hudson came through with the pressure on Barksdale hooked up with Sheldon on a 20 yard pass play to seal the win.

Barksdale finished the game with over 300 yards through the air and 3 TD's and over 50 yards on the ground. The star quarterback also found himself at wide receiver a few times and caught two balls from Tayron Bryant. McSween showed his versatility going for over 100 yards receiving and 40 on the ground as he scored three touchdowns and ran in a two point conversion. Sheldon also went for over 100 yards in the air and scored twice.

Taconic Hills v. Voorheesville

The Titans looked to make things difficult for the Blackbirds on Friday and despite two touchdowns in the fourth quarter came up short, falling 24-22.

The Blackbirds took an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter and that score would hold until the third. Chris McKay got the Titans on the board with a 20 yard run but the two point try was no good and the game was knotted at 6. Right off the ensuing kickoff the Blackbirds took it nearly 80 yards to retake the lead 10-6.

In the fourth Voorheesville ran the ball in to extend their lead to 17-6. Nolan Boice ran in a short score and followed that up with another run for the conversion as the Titans fought to within three. Again Voorheesville responded with a touchdown run and kick as they went up by 10. The Titans got on the board one more time, this time on a McKay reception from Nick Warren to pull to 24-22 but that was as close as it would get.

The Titans finish up their season next week with a crossover game at home against Watervliet on Friday at 7.

The Week that was: Girl's Soccer

For right now I'm going to focus just on the Columbia County teams, because...well, I've got to do a write up for ccSCOOP anyway. The non Columbia County teams will still be mentioned in the write ups along with any other important information.

Taconic Hills

After a 1-1 first half on Wednesday against Cairo the two teams exploded for a combined five goals in the second half, three of which came by the Titans as they pulled out a 4-3 victory. Hara Aoki-Saffer, a player we had discussed as being the most important piece for the Titans scored all four goals in the victory. Emma Gryner another player we keyed in on for the Titans picked up two assists. Janine Hamm continued her strong play in goal making 4 saves in the win.

The Titans earned their second win of the week on Friday as they defeated winless Catskill 2-0. Jamie Albrecht and Hara Aoki-Saffer each scored a goal assisted by Emma Gryner in the second half to help the Titans earn the win.

Hudson

The Bluehawks week got off to a rough start as they had to face off with powerhouse Greenville and fell 7-1. Hudson's lone goal came in the second half when Hailey Hollenbeck assisted on a Sam Davis goal. Jackie Hall made 8 stops in the loss.

Hudson dropped their final contest of the week on Friday as they fell 2-0 to Chatham. Jackie Hall made four saves in the loss but the Bluehawks inability to score doomed them on Friday.

New Lebanon

The Tigers had two games in two days, starting off against Loudonville Christian on Tuesday. The Tigers scored a pair of first half goals for a 2-1 lead heading into halftime before falling 3-2. Geneva Furlano and Hanna Springer each scored a goal in the loss.

On Wednesday the Tigers shutout Doane Stuart, earning a 4-0 victory. Furlano added 2 more goals to her weekly title while Springer scored one more and Juanita Eaton added one.

New Lebanon closed out their week with a game against Rensselaer at home on Friday and earned a hard fought 4-2 win. Furlano continued her torrid scoring pace as she scored 2 more goals, and Springer also added two to bring her weekly total to four.

Ichabod Crane

The Riders had just one game this week, Monday, when they faced off against first place Maple Hill and earned a come from behind 3-1 victory. Check the site for our combined full recap of both the ICC-MH boy's and girl's game for our Game of the Week.

Chatham

The Panthers only had a single game this week as they defeated Hudson 2-0 on Friday. Chatham scored a goal in each half to earn the win. Taylor Wenk scored a goal and added an assist on a Cailey Nieto goal. Brittany Lossow was forced to make 12 saves in the win.

Although it is not a Patroon Conference match, in a battle of two Columbia County teams, New Lebanon and Germantown squared off in a late season Central Hudson Valley League contest. Over the past few seasons these two teams have been on different ends of the league with the Tigers near the top and the Clippers at the bottom, however on Thursday the two teams battled to a 3-3 draw.

New Lebanon scored three goals to open the game with Todd Ferguson, Mike Gavrity and Matt Evans each scoring. Before the half the Clippers drew to with in two when Christian Craig followed up a Cody Broast shot and put it into the back of the net.

In the second half the Clippers kept fighting and Cody Broast drew the Clippers to within one on a goal assited by Ian Whittaker. Germantown would draw even when Whittaker scored off a Broast assist.
